Permian Basin Assist the Officer Foundation
The Odessa Peace Officers Memorial Foundation (OPOMF), presented its monument in honor and memory of the five fallen Odessa Police Department officers: Corporal Gordon Terry Toal, Officer Scott Stanton Smith, Corporals Arlie "Lee" Jones Jr., John Scott Gardner and Abel Renteria Marquez.
Since October of 2007, the OPOMF worked very diligently to raise money to build a monument in memory of the officers that were ambushed in September of 2007 while responding to a domestic disturbance. The monument would also honor the two Odessa Motorcycle Officers who died in the line of the duty during the 1980's.
With the help of generous donators, fund raising efforts and volunteers, the Foundation's dream became a reality. The monument, a statue of St. Michael the Archangel with a fallen officer, was dedicated on September 3, 2010, and sits on the front lawn of the Odessa Police Department.
Mr. Paul Tadlock of Gruene, Texas sculpted the statue. It sits atop a 3 foot granite base with bronze name plates of the fallen officers. Four beautiful benches, air brushed with the fallen officers badges, also adorn the lawn.
The Permian Basin ATO has been established exclusively for assisting:
Peace officers who have been wounded in the line of duty;
Peace officers who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, disease, or injury;
Peace officers who have a spouse or dependent who has been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, disease, or injury;
Peace officers who suffer from mental health issues associated with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of their service; and
Surviving spouses and dependents of peace officers who have been killed in the line of duty.
In July 2017, the PPOA Board voted to officially convert the Memorial Foundation into a Permian Basin Assist the Officer Foundation (ATO). The ATO will continue to be operated through PPOA and governed by a separate committee.
